NSLU2-Linux

Welcome to my corner of NSLU2-Linux. This page gives info on eFfeM (aka FM aka Frans) and his NSLU2 related activities

I bought my NSLU2 somewhere in may 2005 after a few enthousiastic stories of collegues.
I've always had an interest in operating systems. In fact I graduated in 1982 on a small distributed multiprocessor kernel for a dual set of DEC LSI-11's. In 1984 I joined a group that was working on a V7 port to 68020, and in 1985 or so I bought an Atari ST on which I started running Minix. In fact I did quite some work on the 1.5 version of Minix for the Atari ST.

Over the years my OS involvement gradually decreased. However with the slug I'm trying to pick up again.

Initially I had the idea to use the slug to run a torrent client and/or an irc client. However, it soon turned out that one can do a lot more with it.

One of the challenges is to add as much different types of USB devices to it as possible. Until now I managed to get the following devices working:

  • USB dvd writer (Philips JackRabbit JR4DVDRW).
I managed to read and write discs with it (writing using cdrecord). Also I could extract audio using cdparanoia.
  • Conceptronic C05-103 USB hub (no big deal, this was standard supported).
  • various memory sticks (dell, lexar, apacer)
  • Apacer mega steno (memory card reader). This requires multi-lun in your kernel (standard in Openslug 2.7 or later)
  • Kensington 2 port passive USB hub (USB 1.1, standard supported)
  • Philips CPWUE001/00 USB ethernet adapter. See EthernetAdapter
  • Hauppage WinTV PVR USB2 (with hardware MPEG2 encoder). See InstallWinTVPVRUSB2.
  • Canon Powershot S70 camera (using PTP)
  • Philips PCVC680K webcam using the latest pwc drivers (audio requires alsa)
  • Philips PSC805 Aurilium sound card (didn't find a way to use the volume knob and buttons yet)
  • 3Com wireless adapter (with Zydas ZD1211 chipset). (see WirelessNetworkAdapter)
  • Pertelian X2040 LCD display (see InstallPertelianLCD)
  • Conceptronic bluetooth adapter (still working on getting audio transfer to my BT headset)

Currently I'm trying to turn the slug into a home server with content acquisition capabilities.
As media server I am running twonkyvision. I am writing a very simple text based recording daemon to grab content from the WinTV? card. Also I'd like to copy content automatically from CD, memory stick and camera. And further away, web based configuration and control of the PVR and burning of images to CD/DVD.

I also managed to get mp3 encoding running. See MP3Encoding for details.

As of now the NSLU2 is the nicest gadget I have bought in years!
